Our Vision.
Through an unprecedented City Hall commitment to Physical Education (PE) under the PE Works initiative, the New York City Department of Education is leading the nation in revitalizing quality PE, especially at the elementary level, with an infusion of certified PE teachers to provide quality instruction and lead health and wellness efforts in schools with grades K-5. Pathways to PE teacher candidates are inspired leaders who are passionate about teaching students the skills and benefits of setting individual fitness goals, being good team players, and becoming part of a health-focused school community.

Our Training Model.
Pathways to PE's training model is designed to maximize opportunities for Aspiring PE Teachers to observe, practice, and master the pedagogical knowledge and skills necessary for success in their field. The three components of the training model are:
- Master's degree coursework in Physical Education Teaching at Brooklyn College. Courses are offered in the evenings and over the summer. Typically, candidates complete their degree program within 6 semesters.
- Weekly skill-building sessions facilitated by expert PE Instructional Coaches from the Office of School Wellness Programs.
- A 12-week full-day Immersion experience under the guidance and supervision of an experienced PE teacher known as a Cooperating Practitioner (CP). CPs are trained to support Aspiring PE Teachers by gradually transferring all teaching responsibilities, modeling best practices, and providing direct and specific feedback.
